Tooling Technician IV (Injection Molding)

 

 

SUMMARY OF ROLE

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8-hour shifts

The Tooling Technician IV is primarily responsible for the preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all injection molding tooling. This position supports continuous improvement initiatives by developing and fabricating components to enhance safety, process reliability, and scrap reduction. In the absence of a Process Engineer, this role assumes their key responsibilities.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preventive Maintenance (PM) & Repair:
    • Manage and execute the mold PM schedule to ensure optimal performance.
    • Track and report On-Time Completion (OTC) % PM metric to maintain efficiency.
    • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair Hot Runner systems, including valve gates.
    • Diagnose and address molding defects to determine if they are tool- or process-related.
    • Perform mold disassembly, reassembly, and refurbishment as needed.
  • Inventory & Procurement:
    • Audit and track spare parts inventory for injection molds.
    • Order spare parts as needed to maintain production uptime.
  • Process & Technical Support:
    • Develop Standard Operating Conditions (SOCs) for new and existing tooling.
    • Train Level 1, 2, and 3 Tooling Technicians to enhance team skill sets.
    • Work with tooling vendors for mold refurbishments, upgrades, and repairs.
    • Diagnose heating issues and read electrical diagrams for Hot Runner systems.
    • Conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) at toolmaker facilities.
    • Identify process parameters for new or modified molds to ensure product quality.
  • Molding Process & Training:
    • Complete Paulson Training (Practical Injection Molding - Basic Section) with an 80%+ passing score.
    • Demonstrate Paulson PIM Basic training skills in a production environment.
    • Understand and communicate how molding conditions impact part quality and strength.
    • Ensure the correct SOC is posted at each machine for the active tooling.
  • Additional Duties:
    • Support continuous improvement projects to enhance operational efficiency.
    • Any other duties assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 5–10+ years of experience in injection mold tooling required.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in injection molding.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, blueprints, and electrical diagrams.
  • Proficiency in basic math, including fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Office, inventory management software).
  • Understanding of quality control procedures, GMPs, and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and provide training to junior technicians.
